　　Hosting over 500,000 international students, the UK is the world’s second leading study destination (after the US), largely thanks to the strong global reputation of UK universities. An impressive 71 UK universities feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 (again, only the US has more), and four institutions are currently ranked within the global top 10.

　　Despite uncertainties following the nation’s referendum on EU membership in June 2016, UK universities are united in their efforts to continuing welcoming students from across the EU and the entire world. Indeed, the country is home to many of the world’s most internationally diverse campuses and communities – and this, for many, is a large part of the appeal of studying in the UK.

　　Higher education in the UK varies in each constituent state (England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland), though the systems are fairly similar. Undergraduate degrees at universities in the UK typically last three years, although courses in Scotland are usually a year longer.

　　Some UK universities also offer fast-track undergraduate courses which can be completed in as little as two years. You could also choose a vocational-based ‘foundation degree’, which typically lasts one or two years and is similar to the US associate’s degree.

　　Students in the UK start their higher education with a bachelor’s degree, although for some subjects you can enroll on an undergraduate degree that leads directly into a master’s program – these combined courses are four years long. Taken separately, master’s programs last one or two years, and PhDs at least three. Courses are taught in English at most universities in the UK, with some Welsh-language programs offered in Wales and Scottish Gaelic-language programs in Scotland.

　　The University of Cambridge is currently ranked fourth in the world, while the University of Oxford is sixth, followed by UCL (University College London) at seventh and Imperial College London in ninth place.

　　King's College London (KCL) and the University of Edinburgh are also in the global top 25, while the University of Manchester and London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) are within the top 40. A total of 18 UK universities appear in the top 100, and another 12 make the top 200. A shortage of exciting options will not be an issue if you’re looking to study in the UK.

　　In the wake of 2016’s Brexit vote, there’s been concern that the UK could lose some of its appeal as an international study destination. But the 2017 edition of the QS Best Student Cities sees the nation’s capital climb two places to rank third overall – helped in part by the fall in the value of the pound, which has made it a more affordable proposition for international students.

　　Of course, London is still not exactly a cheap option. For international students, tuition fees at the city’s top universities approach those charged in the US, while home and EU undergraduate students are feeling the impact of fee increases implemented since 2012. In addition, rent and living costs are significantly higher in London compared to the rest of the UK.

　　Up 15 places this year, Edinburgh has been ranked as the UK’s second-best student city after London for the third time in a row, beating the other six UK ranked universities in the QS Best Student Cities:Manchester, Coventry, Nottingham, Glasgow, Birmingham and Newcastle.

　　With a relatively small population compared to many of the cities in the index, the Scottish capital has a large student community proportionate to its overall size, meaning it scores especially well in the Student Mix category. Notably, 39% of students at ranked universities in Edinburgh are international, providing a diverse and inclusive atmosphere.

　　Known for its striking castle, historic old town and massive annual events such as the Edinburgh International Festival and New Year’s Hogmanay street party, the city is also home to several of the best universities in the UK. The University of Edinburgh is ranked 19th in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 – the fifth-highest UK entry.

　　Average fees for international students are a little higher than in cities such as London or Manchester. However, for undergraduate students from within the EU (except those from England, Wales or Northern Ireland), university fees are entirely subsidized by the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). So depending on where you’re from, Edinburgh could be one of the most affordable options in the list.

　　The UK’s third best student city after London and Edinburgh, Manchester ranks joint 23rd with Barcelona in the QS Best Student Cities index this year, up 13 places from last year. This strong position is due largely to the world-class universities in Manchester, as well as a fun-packed student culture that gives London a run for its money.

　　Located in the north west of England, Manchester is especially well known for its music scene, which has produced big-name bands such as The Smiths, Joy Division and Oasis. Today its numerous venues continue to be a central part of the UK music circuit, welcoming globally successfully acts and nurturing new talent. More generally, arts, culture and excellent nightlife are all very much in good supply, as are opportunities to explore the rich history of this part of the UK. Manchester played a central role in the industrial revolution – and this can be seen today in the imposing old textile factories and warehouses still dotted around the city.

　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: Joint 34th

　　Up an impressive 29 places in this year’s Best Student Cities index, Glasgow is Scotland’s largest and most populous city, home to two universities in the top 300 of the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017: the University of Glasgow, which ranks joint 63rd, and the University of Strathclyde at joint 272nd. The former is one of the world’s oldest universities, having been founded well over 500 years ago.

　　In recent years, the city has shaken off its previously gritty image to become one the UK’s leading hubs of culture, commerce, research and academia. It is also especially known for its music scene and the fierce rivalry between its two biggest football clubs, Rangers and Celtic.

　　Glasgow has a rich history, having been settled since the pre-Roman era. So there’s no shortage of grand historical architecture (the University of Glasgow boasts some of the grandest), alongside vestiges of the city’s role as one of the world’s leading industrial centers during the 19th century and the gleaming structures of the modern city.

　　Like many other UK cities, Glasgow hosts a large number of international students, and therefore achieves a particularly high score in the Student Mix category of the QS Best Student Cities index, providing opportunities for students to meet people from many different backgrounds and cultures.

　　However, Glasgow receives its strongest score in the new Student View category, helping it to climb 29 spots overall in this year’s Best Student Cities index. This indicator, based on ratings from students themselves, shows that Glasgow’s students are certainly enjoying their experience and are often keen to stay after graduation. 　　Located in the West Midlands area of England, Coventry is home to Coventry University (ranked among the world’s top 700), and the University of Warwick (ranked joint 51st in the world) – the latter being just to the south of the city on a 700-acre campus. Their combined student population is around 6.4% of the city total, with international students making up around 41% of enrolments, giving it a high score for the Student Mix category of the index (3rd out of 100 cities).

　　Coventry’s also gets a strong rating from graduate employers, thanks to the strong reputation of its universities as well as the city’s long history of leadership in manufacturing and design. This legacy is reflected in the fact that Coventry University is one of only a few institutions to offer a course dedicated to automotive design, while the University of Warwick has a center dedicated to supporting innovative collaborations between academia and industry (Warwick Manufacturing Group), which runs a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

　　Warwick University’s Arts Centre, which houses various performance spaces, galleries and a cinema, is one of the largest arts centers in the UK. Coventry has several other theaters and art galleries, and there are a number of large venues in and around the city which are used for both music concerts and major sports events.

　　Known for its proud links to the Robin Hood legend, Nottingham is located in the East Midlands of England in the UK, and affectionately referred to as the ‘Queen of the Midlands’. It’s also known for being a major sporting center, named the 'Home of English Sport' in October 2015.

　　Getting about is easy in Nottingham thanks to its award-winning public transport system, and there are a great deal of things to do, with large shopping centers, theatres, galleries, music and entertainment venues. There’s also plenty of history and culture to explore, from museums, to Nottingham Castle (along with the famous Robin Hood statue), and the Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, which claims to be the oldest pub in England.

Not only is there a large international student population in Nottingham, but the city’s highest-ranked university, the University of Nottingham, has branch campuses in Malaysia and China, and has been praised for its international approach to higher education.

　　However, Nottingham’s highest score is for the new Student View category – with a strong score of 6th, the city is certainly proving popular with its students, and received lots of praise in our student survey for its thriving student lifestyle, nightlife and friendliness. One student survey respondent said there’s a“Great balance between top ranking university education and brilliant nightlife – I had the stereotypical student life and loved it!” Another explained, “The campus is beautiful and the city is really affordable on the UK scale.”

　　Up 11 places in the QS Best Student Cities this year, Birmingham is the UK’s second-largest city, located in the heart of the country. Though often overshadowed by the likes of London, Manchester or Edinburgh, it is a unique city with plenty of character and charm of its own.

　　From its industrial roots, Birmingham has become a thriving commercial and financial center. It’s also the UK’s largest center of higher education outside London, home to five universities, two of which rank among the top 400 in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.

　　Birmingham’s ‘Big City Plan’ includes the development of a new state-of-the-art £189 million library, revitalized public transport, beautifully restored Victorian buildings and more. Away from these developments, Birmingham also boasts more miles of canals than Venice (although the latter is far smaller, and has a higher concentration of canals).

　　Newcastle (or Newcastle-upon-Tyne), the largest city in North-East England, climbs 11 places in the Best Student Cities this year, and is diverse, vibrant and welcoming. Named after the Norman castle of the city center, the city’s history spans from the Roman period, to its time as an important industrial center for coal-mining, engineering and shipping during the 19th century. Newcastle’s aptitude for engineering continues to this day, with award-winning structures such as the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

　　The thriving cultural hub of the Quayside (the banks of the river Tyne) is home to many restaurants, bars, night clubs and public spaces, combining the best of the city and nearby town Gateshead. The city also annually hosts the world's largest half marathon, the Great North Run. Residents from Newcastle and the surrounding area are dubbed ‘Geordies’, as is the distinctive local dialect, which is the closest language to 1,500-year-old Anglo-Saxon left in England.

　　Three universities featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017 are located in or close to Newcastle. These include the nearby Durham University – about a half hour drive away – which is ranked 74th in the world and is a member of the prestigious ‘Russell Group’ (an association of leading research universities).
